32 hours later I have landed in Madrid!! My first flight from Minneapolis/St Paul to Frankfurt was delayed so I ended up missing my flight to Madrid which was supposed to leave at 13:15 (1:15) and arrive at 15:50 (3:50pm). Instead they gave me a flight for 2l:10 (9:10pm) and arriving at about 23:30 (11:30pm). This was a ridiculous amount of time and stress I couldn’t wait to get to Madrid or wherever at that point because I was so sick of being in an airport.
I felt a little sad being all alone but my best friends from home wrote me letters and reminded me why I’m on this journey and why I need to continue. I am so passionate about Spain so I knew it’ll all be worth it in the end. As the captain made his landing call I looked out and saw the city of Madrid lit up from below reassuring me why I’m coming here in the first place.
My host mom and dad welcomed me in the best way. They picked me up from the airport at midnight and were so welcoming and grabbed my luggage for me. Their home is a cute little flat that overlooks the “Puerta de America” entrance of “El Parque del Buen Retiro.” This park is amazing and if you come to Madrid I’m sure it’ll be on your itinerary
Living in a different country definitely has it’s challenges like the language obviously but not to worry, once you spend a few days forcing yourself to use your highschool level of Spanish to try to speak with the locals they’ll appreciate the effort and try to help you out as best as they can.
The hard part of the trip is over now for some tapas crawls, language classes, and exploring this wonderful city that I get to call home!
